ARTDES 358 001 Projection of the Grid on 3D Space

Exhibition Idea: Reflection on Design within Vistoe 606 Universal Shelving System

Aim of the project:

  1. Complete the course requirement for my ARTDES 358 Publication Design course in Umich.

  2. Explore a unique angle of Dieter Ram's design in detail.

This exhibition is a semester-long solo project in developing an exhibition related to a designer, artist, or any topic of interest.

The name Dieter Rams quickly pops into my mind. The revolutionary German designer who served as the head of Braun from. His design influenced generations of designers, such as Jony Ive, the former chief designer at Apple.

Anyone who is passionate about product design or furniture design must have heard his famous quote, "Less but better," and also the ten principles of good design. The literature around him is ample, and a unique angel seems to be impossible to find.

Personally, I have always been in love with his Vistoe 606 shelving system. With the waves of modular design coming back as a "new trend," we once again witness how pioneer Rams is in his design concepts.

Some topics I am thinking of exploring:

  1. Building Block: all the parts explained + universal design ideology

  2. Ratio and the Grid: Why is the ratio of the shelves? Why this height and arrangement

  3. Internal Harmony: How harmony is achieved with all kinds of aesthetics - the power of the canvas

  4. External Harmony: Why does Vistoe 606 suit most kinds of interior styles? Flow of Space?

  5. A Timeless Design: Material, Design details, manufacturing and comparison.

Franc generously offers an opportunity to connect with Tom Strong, a Yale graphic designer and passionate collector of Ram's work. I cannot wait to explore further about the Vistoe 606.

Current Design Ideas:

Binding: Section sewn binding (allow the book to be laid flat)

Cover: Ratio and Grid

Content: Gird printed on tracing Paper that allows you to interact with the catalog content
